FADO MUSIC

Fado is a musical style that emerged in the early 19th century in Lisbon, and is believed to have originated in the "taverns" of the neighborhoods of Alfama and Bairro Alto, most frequented by sailors and prostitutes. Severa, the first Fado singer to become famous, was considered a prostitute. In popular belief, Fado is a musical style that sings the lives of the poor with a melancholy feeling. The most famous Fado singers are: Alfredo Marceneiro, Herminia Silva, Amália Rodrigues, Max, João Ferreira Rosa and Carlos do Carmo. In the current generation you should listen to Mariza, Camané, Dulce Pontes, Kátia Guerreiro, among others. See Places to Listen Fado here.

SIZE MATTERS

The size of a city grows with the number of people coming to live, work or just spend time in that region. On the other hand, two cities with the same population growth, may not expand in area the same way due to the policy of growth in height. This relation, area/height, completely changes the day to day life of cities with the same population.

From the point of view of short-term vacations, metropolitan areas are a nightmare because all cities have important places of interest outside the historic center and if the access to these places is very time consuming, tourists have to give up visiting many of them. On the other hand, if the city is too small, may not have enough points of interest to justify the trip. In the case of Lisbon, the metropolitan area has the perfect size for a short vacation because tourists can reach amazing places, such as Sintra, Alentejo or the beaches in just a few minutes.
